How To Install A Door Knocker
To fit a door knocker you’ll need the following tools;
-
A cordless screwdriver
-
Chosen door knocker
-
Small pilot hole drill bit
-
5mm drill bit
-
Small screws (they come supplied with our knockers)
-
Spirit level
-
Pencil
-
Firstly, you’ll want to install the base plate of your door knocker. Mark out on the door the screw marks as to where you want to place it, use a spirit level to ensure the markings are level. The knocker typically grips onto the base plate, however this can vary depending on what door knocker you purchase.
-
Taking the base plate back to the door and lining up with the markings, you want to make the screw holes with the small pilot hole drill bit.
-
Changing to the larger drill bit, you then want to use this to make the holes larger where the screws will go in, checking to see what depth you need to go into the door to accommodate this.
-
Next, you want to screw in the screws onto the base plate that are supplied with the door knocker.
-
Once they’re in place and the base plate is solid, it’s time to slot the door knocker on by gripping it into place.
-
Lastly, check with the spirit level to ensure that the door knocker is straight.
How To Clean Cast Iron Door Knocker
To clean a cast iron door knocker, put half a teaspoon of mild washing up liquid into a small bucket of warm water. Use a wet sponge, soft cotton cloth, or an old toothbrush for cleaning it.
Gently wipe down the cast iron door knocker, using the old toothbrush to get into the intricate details easily.
Don’t scrub too hard, and remove any soap residue with a clean, damp towel. Dry the cast iron immediately with a towel, ensuring you dry all crevices and details.
If you find rust in the area when you clean the cast iron, finish cleaning first and then use a fine grit sandpaper on it and then rinse thoroughly. Use touch up paint specifically for the iron if necessary.
We always recommend that a finish is applied to cast iron, painting, lacquering or oiling will offer a level of protection against moisture, and prevent it from rusting.
